Rebellious Twists On Classic Merienda At Restaurante Pia Y Damaso

If you already read my other review on Restaurante Pia Y Damaso when I featured most of their appetizers and main entrees, I want you to know that just as much as I enjoyed the said dishes dishes, I also happened to try out some interesting and rebellious takes on their items that are best served during that traditional afternoon ritual of Filipinos that we like to call 'merienda'.

Although the term 'merienda' itself is widely known as one of the many things we have acquired based from our Spanish influences, there is no doubt that the merienda choices at Restaurante Pia Y Damaso are definitely a notch higher and might just exceed your tasteful expectations.

Croque Monja
Take for example their sandwiches, such as the Croque Monja, with its playful execution of using tinapa as a filling in between two perfectly toasted bread, which is made like a Croque Monsieur. While the Kua Pao Pandesal is like how I like to eat bread: with a hefty amount of savory pork slices in between them. But Restaurante Pia Y Damaso uses spices like garlic, soy, anise and peanut to braise the pork belly, and tops the sandwich with some mustard confit and cilantro leaves for that added punch of flavor. With one bite of the sandwich I smiled so hard that my eyes instantly went Chinese!

DESSERTS
If you think about it, Restaurante Pia Y Damaso is actually a nice place to stay and hang out with friends so it converts into a lazy coffee shop during afternoons. Even before you come inside the restaurant, you can already see a display of their signature cakes and desserts from the windows at Restaurant Pia Y Damaso, and every kind is deliciously insane.

Sisa's Chocolate Dementia
Cakes like Sisa's Chocolate Dementia is made with a cake base with almond pastille and chocolate mousee and covered with dark chocolate ganache. Or a perfect slice of Brazo ni Doña Vicki might be something you'd prefer, which is made with the most perfect meringue cake and in the middle is a sweet yema like curd that is unlike any other brazo cake that you've tried before.

Goat Milk Leche Flan
The classics have been twisted seditiously and made even more interesting. And somehow we still find something extraordinary with something like the usual Leche Flan and Halo Halo. So Chef Bambi decided on using goat's milk for the leche flan: terrific. And then she decided to add some pastillas and queso de bola in a typical Halo Halo and called it Pepay The Dancer. Yes, it's crazy but I loved it.

Toasted Yema Parfait
Or what about Yema? That sweet little piece of heaven that sticks in between your teeth as a kid? The one that's molded in triangles that makes you get that combination of hard sweet candy and soft almost paste-like consistency? Why not put this yema mixture on a glass with some cream and cookie crumbs underneath? Why not? 

Or how about making bibingka into a waffle, top it with queso de bola, and serve it with a special coco jam like syrup. How insane is that?

Why...Restaurante Pia Y Damaso can! And they are insance. And it's a sin not to try them! These are all just yum!

Subversive Cocktail
And nothing is more insane than having cocktails on a weekday afternoon. Yes, I did take a sip of two of the many interesting cocktails at Restaurante Pia Y Damaso. The Subversive cocktails are quite strong for me but I loved this After Eight Cocktail that is spiked with mint and a bit of vodka. Yep, it was a great afternoon after having it!
